Best of Summer Blueberries

Blueberries never seem to get enough credit in my book. Strawberries are the earlier berry that everyone is excited to see and blueberries seem to get lost in the shuffle when they come in season a few weeks later into summer. Where we live in Wisconsin, we source many of our blueberries from Michigan. I ordered 5# from our local farm stand this summer and immediately froze them. I’ve been thawing them to enjoy over the past month in a variety of different recipes… and several cocktails.

A quick hack for freezing blueberries – do not wash them! Freeze as they are – DRY – they’ll all clump together if you wash first. After you take out of the freezer to use, give a quick rinse to clean them.

Get the recipe here. It won’t be quite as blue if you do this, but I would recommend straining this cocktail well as muddled blueberries have a tendency to get stuck in your straw. The sweet peach and mellow yet sweet blueberries were a surprisingly good pair with tequila.

Get the recipe here. If you’re not into an overly sweet cocktail or mocktail, this is a great option. The basil leaves and club soda make for a bubbly but approachable flavor.

Get the recipe here. I love pretty much every fruit and shortbread bar I’ve ever come across. But I really love the shortbread bars that don’t require you to boil down a jam for the fruit layer. This recipe comes together quickly, with a buttery shortbread cookie crust that par bakes first and a creamy blueberry custard topping and crumble on top of that.

Summer Peach and Blueberry Salad | Recipe by Kalefornia Kravings

Get the recipe here. This salad mixes kale, blueberries and sliced peaches with a honey vinaigrette. The beauty of this salad is that you can only really enjoy this during the short, short window when both peaches and blueberries are in season. I loved how crunchy the pecans and frisse lettuce were in this recipe!

Red, White and Blueberry Bacon Burger with Basil Aioli | Recipe by House of Nash Eats

Get the recipe here. I wasn’t at all sure how I was going to feel about a blueberry balsamic reduction on a burger, but going in with no preconceptions left me supremely pleased with the outcome. This blueberry reduction came together on the stovetop quickly and brought great flavor to the meal.
